Declutter Your Home: What to Do with Old Trophies, Medals, and Cups

Somewhere in your basement or garage, there's a box. Maybe two. Inside it: a youth soccer trophy from 2004, a couple of swimming medals with faded ribbons, a spelling bee plaque with your name misspelled, and a participation cup you forgot you even earned.

Sound familiar?

For many, holding on to old awards isn't just about guilt—it’s a way to preserve cherished memories and the sentimental value attached to those moments. Tossing a trophy feels wrong, even when you haven't looked at it in a decade. But keeping a shelf full of dusty cups and plastic figurines doesn't feel great either, especially if you're trying to simplify your space.

So what do you actually do with them?

Start by Sorting, Not Tossing

Before you throw everything into a donation bag, take twenty minutes to sort through what you have. Pull out the pieces that still mean something to you. The rest can go.

Most trophies are made from plastic, resin, or cheap metal, which means they're not worth much materially. But a few might carry real sentimental weight. That relay medal from your last season. A team MVP award from a job you loved. Keep those. Let the rest move on.

For the ones you're letting go, local youth leagues, school drama departments, and community theatres will often take old trophies and repurpose them. Some trophy shops (us included) can strip and re-engrave cups for a second life. Recycling is another option, though you'll want to separate metal parts from plastic bases first.

Memory Boxes and Shadow Frames

If you want to keep the memory without keeping the bulk, a memory box is one of the simplest solutions. Pick a shoebox-sized container and limit yourself to what fits. Medals, ribbons, small plates pulled off old trophies, a team photo or two. That's it.

Shadow frames take this a step further. A shallow wall-mounted frame with a glass front lets you pin medals, patches, and ribbons into a single display that looks intentional instead of cluttered. One frame replaces an entire shelf of hardware. You can find these at most craft stores, and they're easy to put together in an afternoon.

The goal isn't to erase the history. It's to keep it in a form that doesn't take over your living room.

Go Digital with the Stuff You Can't Keep

For the trophies that don't make the cut but still feel hard to throw away, take a photo. Lay them out on a table, get a decent shot, and store it in a folder on your phone or a shared family album. You'll never frame the photo, but knowing it exists makes it easier to let the object go.

Some people go a step further and create a quick photo book with captions. "2006. Under-12 basketball. We lost every game but one." It tells the story without needing a three-foot trophy gathering dust on a shelf.

Modern compact glass award, streamlined alternative to bulky old trophies.

If You're Replacing Old Awards, Go Smaller

Here's where it gets practical. If you're still active in a league, a workplace, or any group that hands out awards, think about what actually gets displayed versus what ends up in that basement box.

Compact, well-made pieces tend to stick around. A small glass award like the Columbia Glass Award takes up about as much space as a coffee mug and looks clean on a desk. An Acrylic Jade Block Award is even more pared back. Just a solid block with an engraved message. Nothing to collect dust around.

And if wall space is easier to spare than shelf space, a flat plaque like the Engraved Marble Mist Laminate Plaque mounts flush and looks like it belongs next to framed art, not in a storage unit.

The pattern is the same: smaller footprint, better materials, more likely to stay on display instead of ending up in the next declutter pile.

Keep What Matters, Clear the Rest

You don't have to throw away every award you've ever earned. But you also don't need to keep all of them taking up space in a closet. Sort through the pile, save the ones that still mean something, and find a better format for the rest, whether that's a shadow frame, a photo album, or a single well-chosen replacement piece.

And if you're shopping for new awards for your team, league, or business, reach out to us. We're happy to help you find something worth keeping out on display.
